Anton Köther - Mummified (Études For Synth) (V63)
Following last year’s beautifully enthralling, caustic and opulent ‘Hrimfaxi’, Anton Köther presents ‘Mummified (Études For Synth)’, a work of knotted compositional exploration, paradoxically subtle, harsh, soothing and disquieting, with all the jarring aural components working toward a sense of total immersion.
Initially created as a means of testing newly acquired equipment, ‘Mummified’ soon formed into a more musically obtuse and conceptually elaborate work, being infused inevitably with Anton’s wilfully abstract and absurdist style of sonic exploration within its relatively rigid technical parameters.
A harder, more austere execution compared to Anton’s previous work ‘Hrimfaxi’, but still imbued with a rare, menacing calm, ‘Mummified’ rarely sits within one defined musical bracket as each track ricochets from undulating, intimidating sawtoothed drones to bucolic, unsettling ambience to blown-out, noise-drenched Brecht-ian dramaturgy, while each moment is peppered with dyspeptic ticks whilst sonic fuses seem to be continually blowing. The one thing that binds all this abstruse tumult and ominous serenity being Anton’s restless and oppositional approach to composition.
'Mummified (Études For Synth)' finds Anton Köther once again taking the longer, trickier and more perilous road toward executing his concepts and compositions, but thankfully he possesses such singular fortitude that it unifies all the myriad twists and turns he takes us on under his own particularly unique and profoundly affecting umbrella.
