BALF - EFFLORESCENCE (V58)

After a clutch of releases on Industrial Coast that demonstrated a sinewy, claustrophobic and agitated control of blown out harsh noise components, BALF now branches out with ‘EFFLORESCENCE’, incorporating a more cogitative and mellifluous approach to sound building.

Billowing, cavernous textures radiate with a gauzy, dreamlike quality, suggesting placidity and even delicacy, but with a creeping sense of ominous spaciousness, until the crushing waves of intermittent sub-bass thunder overwhelm the diaphanous miasma.

Each track is its own study in stasis, like an interval fixed in time, creating a sense of hollowed out, muted effulgence. The only overt sense of movement is created by abstract, contorted loops that knock, hiccup and murmur arhythmically, creating warped, sedative pulses running like old faulty machinery, separate from the roiling, plangent washes of intangible sound swirling around it.

‘EFFLOURESENCE’ is the sound of anxious stillness, its threat is opaque and inscrutable, hidden within an almost halcyon textural wash. It demands attention through oblique suggestion rather than raging insistence, but always carries with it an inferred sense of unease and disquiet.
