Distraxi - Attis (V44)

Alina Church and her Distraxi project has been a prodigious, formidable and singular voice within the UK noise underground in recent years, having, with dizzying frequency, produced a litany of punishing and galvanising releases on excellent labels like Brachleigen Tapes, Outsider Art, Eggy Tapes, Summer Interlude, TSHN, Outsider Industries and her own Ridge Tapes imprint.

‘Attis’ follows a thematically similar thread to her previous full length release ‘Colour Of The Sky’ by excavating history to find context and parallels for the present. Named after the consort of Cybele in Phrygian and Greek mythology, ‘Attis’ channels and transforms these fables into personal analogues, as a means of absorbing and making sense of the ulterior and interior chaos and struggle of contemporary transgender existance, as well as emphasising the ancient historical precendent of the spectrum of gender.

This fiercely intense context is communicated though some of the most ferocious, eclectic and punishing work in Distraxi’s catalogue. Alina traverses truly caustic harsh noise, thunderous, guttural drone work and sinister, foreboding moments of gloomy ambience within its capacious 50 minute runtime. Building on her continual scrutiny of her creative capacity she continues to push forward and exceed the previous extremities reached, in both content and delivery. ‘Attis’ is a compelling, imposing and acutely powerful release made by an artist communicating at an exceptionally profound level.
